What Causes Hair Loss?
If you grew up hearing that baldness is caused by vitamin deficiencies, poor circulation to the scalp or too much hat-wearing, you might be surprised to know that all of these theories have been disproved. Also untrue:
1) You can tell if you'll lose your hair by looking at your maternal grandfather and uncles-- NO.
2) Forty-year old men who haven't lost their hair never will -- NO.
3) Brushing your hair 100 strokes each day makes your hair healthier -- NO.
4) Experts say that baldness, or alopecia, is primarily caused by a combination of aging, hormonal changes and family history of baldness (on either parent's side). There are generally two types of hair loss:
A) Anagen affluvium -- permanent hair loss caused by the destruction of hair follicles.
B) Telogen effluvium -- temporary hair loss due to transitory damage to the follicles.
Anagen effluvium is generally due to internally administered medications, such as chemotherapy agents, that poison the growing hair follicles. Telogen effluvium is due to an increased number of hair follicles entering the resting stage. The most common causes of telogen effluvium are:
1) Physical stress -- surgery, illness, anemia, rapid weight change
2) Emotional stress -- mental illness, death of a family member
3) Tthyroid abnormalities medications -- high doses of vitamin A (sometimes present in diet supplements), blood pressure medications, gout medications
4)
Hormonal changes -- pregnancy, birth control pills, menopause.
ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA
Up to 95% of permanent hair loss is due to androgenetic alopecia, a hereditary condition that affects millions of men, women and children. This condition is characterized by what is called pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness generally starts with a receding hairline at the front or thinning of the crown hair and gradually progresses until, in extreme cases, only a thin horseshoe shaped rim of hair remains at the back and sides of the head. Female pattern baldness, which has received more attention in recent years, refers to general thinning of hair all over the scalp, usually beginning at around age 30 and becoming more noticeable after 40 and particularly after menopause.
HAIR SYSTEMS
When it comes to hair loss, everyone's situation is different and personal. While heredity is the primary cause of hair loss in most cases, the severity of hair loss, its pattern, and the impact on that person's life is really unique. For many men and women, the benefits of a nonsurgical hair system could make all the difference.
Custom, nonsurgical hair replacement is presently the only solution that works for all types of hair loss for men and women, including patients who lost their hair from chemotherapy, as well as slopecia areata patients, alopecia totalis patients and severely scarred hair transplant patients. This is the only solution that can completely restore one's hair in any density, color and texture.
The best hair systems are custom made out of excellent-quality human hair matched to the hair of the client. The hair of less expensive hair systems may either be made of a moderate-quality human hair, animal hair, or artificial fibers. Most expensive and mid-priced hair systems are made from European hair that once grew naturally in a wide variety of colors and textures.
Human hair is fragile, so even the most expensive and expertly made hairpiece needs regular maintenance and needs to be replaced after time. Hair systems can be attached semi-permanently, temporarily, or with clips. Semi-permanently attached hair systems are designed to be removed by a hair technician or stylist, usually once every six weeks. In most cases, they are affixed to the scalp with a liquid adhesive.
Temporary adhesive includes double-sided tape to attach the hair system. You can remove it any time you want and then reattach it.
With a clip attachment, metal clips are securely attached to the underside of the hair system, fastened to your own hair that is either under or adjacent to the hair system. These are also easily removed and reattached.
Hair systems are the most popular method of hair replacement, but the cost and appearance of any given hair system varies based on the materials used and the level of craftsmanship used to create it.
